About devin

We are in year 2 of the exciting and intense process of building our farm. We are located in NE Kansas, about 50 miles from Kansas City. I discovered my calling as a farmer when I was finishing my degree in Anthropology at the University of Kansas in 2012. I quickly abandoned an uncertain future in academia to pursue farm internships and working for other folks for several years. It wasn't until 2020 that I finally found the courage to strike out on my own. It has always been the business side of farming, the profit driven side, where crunching numbers and planning and organization comes in that had intimidated me. It still does! Thankfully there are so many resources for those of us who are starting out these days and I'm plugging away at it.

I farm with my partner who also has several years of experience working for local organic farmers, as well as my 2 year old son. We just purchased 38 acres of land which we will be sharing with my mom and her partner as well as my grandmother. Last year we farmed on borrowed land and sold mostly to farmers markets. It was basically a trial and error year where we just got our feet wet. Last year we grew a little bit of everything and found out what people really like. I had a lot of success selling 'build your own bouquets' at the farmers markets. This year we will be selling to an already established CSA that serves multiple local communities as well as working with another organic farmer to grow some crops together like tomatoes and potatoes where we don't yet have the equipment or land prepared for. We will focus our efforts on salad greens, carrots and beets as well as herbs and cut flowers. I am eventually looking to focus on perennial berry and fruit production, cut flowers, as well as a line of medicinal herb products and teas!
